Possible Causes
Steam boiler overheating, Failed steam thermostat, Blocked steam circuit due to limescale, Faulty steam control triac on PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the machine and allow the steam boiler to cool completely. Never open the machine while the boiler is under pressure.
- Check for blocked steam wand:
- Remove the steam tip and soak it in hot water to dissolve milk residue.
- Use the supplied cleaning tool or a fine pin to clear the steam holes.
- Descale steam circuit:
- Run a descale cycle focusing on the steam circuit if your model supports it.
- After descaling, run steam for 30–60 seconds to flush remaining solution.
- Reset attempt: After cooling and cleaning, power the machine back on and test steam. If ER11 persists, the steam thermostat or sensor may be faulty.
- Internal inspection (advanced):
- Access the steam boiler and locate the steam thermostat/thermal cut-out.
- Check for signs of overheating or a manually resettable thermostat (some have a small reset button).
- Repair: Replace the steam thermostat / thermal cut-out if it has failed. Investigate and correct any underlying cause of overheating (scale, blocked wand, faulty control).
