Possible Causes

Clogged water inlet filter, Defective inlet solenoid valve, Kinked or pinched inlet hose from reservoir, Faulty flowmeter sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Switch the coffee maker OFF, unplug it from the mains, and allow it to cool completely before opening any covers or removing parts.

  • Check water tank: Remove the SMEG water reservoir, ensure it is filled above the minimum level and correctly seated. Reinsert firmly until it clicks.
  • Clean inlet filter: At the base of the water tank or at the tank outlet, locate the small mesh filter. Rinse it under warm water and gently brush away scale or debris. Do not use sharp tools.
  • Inspect inlet hose path: On models with a removable tank that docks into the side or rear, visually check that the plastic inlet tube inside the housing is not kinked or crushed. Straighten gently if needed.
  • Descale the inlet circuit: Fill the tank with a descaling solution approved for SMEG coffee machines. Run a descaling cycle if available, or several hot water cycles (without coffee) to flush the inlet and internal lines. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water afterward.
  • Check for flowmeter issues (advanced): If you are comfortable removing the top cover (after unplugging), locate the flowmeter in the inlet line (small round plastic device with two hoses). Check for visible scale buildup or blockage and clean or replace if necessary.
  • If E01 persists: The inlet solenoid valve or flowmeter may be defective. At this point, contact a qualified SMEG service technician for testing and replacement.
