Possible Causes
Open heating element in boiler/thermoblock, Faulty triac or relay on control board, Broken wiring to heater, Defective temperature sensor causing lockout
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the machine and allow it to cool. Do not attempt to bypass safety devices.
- Power reset: Leave the machine unplugged for 10 minutes, then reconnect and try again. Sometimes transient faults clear after a reset.
- Check for descaling requirement: If the machine has been used heavily without descaling, run a full descaling cycle. Severe scale can cause localized overheating and heater failure.
- Inspect power cord and outlet: Verify that the outlet provides stable power and that the cord is not damaged or excessively warm.
- Internal checks (advanced): With covers removed and machine unplugged, inspect wiring to the heater and NTC sensor for burns or breaks. Measure heater resistance with a multimeter; an open circuit indicates a failed element.
- If heater or control board is defective: Replacement of the thermoblock/boiler or main PCB is required. This is a high-voltage repair and should be performed by a SMEG-authorized technician.
