Possible Causes

Faulty water tank level sensor, Damaged or misaligned magnetic float, Defective reed switch or Hall sensor on chassis, Dirty sensor area preventing detection

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF and unplug the machine before inspecting sensors.

  • Remove and reseat tank: Take out the water tank and reinstall it firmly. Ensure it is the correct SMEG tank model and not a non-original replacement.
  • Clean tank and sensor window: On many SMEG models, a magnetic float inside the tank is read by a sensor through a clear window. Clean the tank walls and the sensor window on the machine with a soft cloth to remove scale or film.
  • Check float movement: Tilt the tank and verify that the internal float moves freely. If it is stuck due to scale, soak the tank in a descaling solution and rinse thoroughly.
  • Test with full tank: Fill the tank to maximum and reinstall. Some sensors are more reliable at higher water levels.
  • If E09 persists: The reed switch or Hall sensor on the machine side may be defective or misaligned. This requires opening the housing and replacing the sensor, which should be done by a technician.
