Possible Causes
Carafe not seated on warming plate, Stuck drip-stop lever in filter basket, Faulty carafe presence microswitch, Misaligned warming plate sensor magnet
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker before reaching under the filter basket or around the warming plate.
- 1. Check carafe position
- Ensure the glass or thermal carafe is fully pushed back and centered on the warming plate.
- Remove and reseat the carafe firmly.
- 2. Inspect drip-stop mechanism
- Open the filter basket door.
- Locate the drip-stop lever or valve at the bottom of the basket.
- Press it up and down several times to ensure it moves freely and is not stuck with coffee residue.
- Clean the area with warm soapy water, then dry thoroughly.
- 3. Clean carafe bottom and plate
- Wipe the bottom of the carafe and the warming plate to remove coffee spills that may interfere with sensors.
- 4. Check carafe sensor switch (advanced)
- Unplug the unit and remove the bottom cover.
- Locate the small microswitch or magnetic sensor under the warming plate.
- Verify that its actuator moves when the carafe is pressed down and that the wiring connector is secure.
- 5. Replacement
- If the microswitch is physically broken or does not click when pressed, replace it with a compatible Sunbeam carafe sensor switch.
- If E4 persists with a known-good switch, the control board input circuit may be faulty and require replacement.
