Possible Causes

Water tank not seated correctly, Water level float stuck, Water level sensor failure on reservoir, Harness connection loose on control PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker before inspecting internal parts. Allow the unit to cool completely if it was recently used.

Step-by-step checks:

  • Reseat the water tank: Remove the Swan water reservoir completely, check for debris on the bottom valve and the tank guides, then firmly reinstall it until it clicks or sits flush. Many Swan models will show E1 if the tank is not fully engaged.
  • Check water level: Fill the reservoir to at least the minimum mark. Some Swan coffee makers trigger E1 when the float sensor detects an empty tank.
  • Free the float: If your reservoir has a visible float, gently shake the tank and look for a stuck float. Rinse the tank with warm soapy water to remove scale or coffee residue that may be jamming the float.
  • Clean sensor area: On the base where the tank sits, wipe the sensor area and valve with a damp cloth to remove scale or coffee grounds that may interfere with detection.
  • Power reset: With the tank correctly seated and filled, plug the unit back in and hold the power/start button for 5–10 seconds to reset the control board (if your model supports this).
  • Internal inspection (advanced): If E1 persists, unplug the unit, remove the bottom cover (usually Phillips screws), and inspect the wiring harness from the water level sensor area to the main control PCB for loose or damaged connectors. Only proceed if you are comfortable working with appliances; otherwise contact a technician.

When to stop: If the error remains after reseating and cleaning the tank and you find burnt or damaged wiring, do not continue using the machine. Seek professional service.
