Display shows E2 and the Swan coffee maker will not heat or brew.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker and allow at least 30 minutes for the heating plate and internal boiler to cool before touching any components.
Basic checks:
- Power cycle: Unplug the unit for 5 minutes, then plug it back in and try again. Transient faults can sometimes clear.
- Check for scale buildup: Heavy limescale on the heating block can cause abnormal temperature readings. Run a full descaling cycle if the unit will allow it, using a Swan-approved descaler or white vinegar diluted per the manual.
Advanced inspection (only if competent):
- Remove the bottom or rear cover (depending on model) to access the NTC thermistor attached to the aluminum heating block or stainless boiler.
- Inspect the thermistor leads and connector for corrosion, broken insulation, or loose fit on the control PCB.
- If you have a multimeter, measure the thermistor resistance at room temperature and compare with the service spec (typical NTC values are 50kΩ, 100kΩ, etc.). An open circuit or 0Ω reading indicates a failed sensor.
- Replace the thermistor assembly if it is out of spec or physically damaged. Ensure the new sensor is firmly clamped to the heater surface with thermal paste if originally used.
Warning: Do not bypass or short the thermistor to clear the error; this can cause overheating and fire risk.
