Possible Causes

Residual manufacturing oils in water path, New plastic components off-gassing, Use of flavored cleaners or detergents in reservoir

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Cleaning can be done with the unit unplugged except when running rinse cycles.

Initial cleaning:

  • Run 2–3 full reservoirs of plain water through the machine without coffee.
  • Then run a cycle with a mild descaling solution or white vinegar (diluted), followed by several rinse cycles with fresh water.

Component cleaning:

  • Wash the reservoir, filter basket, and carafe thoroughly with warm soapy water and rinse well.

A slight plastic smell is common in new machines and should dissipate after several uses. Persistent strong chemical odors may indicate a defective component that should be reported to Swan.
