Possible Causes
Residue from manufacturing on plastic parts, Overheating plastic water path components, Low-quality water causing odors, Coffee oils rancid in internal passages
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you smell burning plastic, unplug immediately and do not continue using the appliance.
- Initial cleaning cycles: For new T-fal coffee makers, run 2–3 full cycles with just water and a small amount of vinegar, then rinse with plain water.
- Clean removable parts: Wash the water reservoir, filter basket, and carafe thoroughly with warm, soapy water and rinse well.
- Check for overheating: If the smell is strong and seems like burning, inspect the underside and cord for discoloration or melting. Discontinue use if found.
Persistent strong chemical or burning odors may indicate overheating internal plastic parts or wiring and require professional inspection.
