Possible Causes
Burned-out heating element in copper boiler, Open secondary thermostat, Loose wiring connection to boiler, Failed internal thermal cutout
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the coffee maker and allow it to cool completely before opening the base.
- Confirm symptom: Fill the water reservoir, turn the unit on, and wait 5–10 minutes. If the water in the reservoir remains cold and no steam or gurgling is heard, the heating circuit is not working.
- Check external factors: Ensure the brew basket and carafe are correctly seated; some models have a carafe-sensing switch that must be engaged.
- Internal inspection: Remove the bottom cover to access the copper boiler assembly and wiring.
- Test the heating element: Disconnect the two wires going to the boiler heating element. Use a multimeter in resistance mode across the element terminals. A typical reading is in the tens of ohms. If it reads open (infinite resistance), the element is burned out and the boiler assembly must be replaced.
- Check thermostats: Locate the thermostats mounted on the boiler. Test for continuity at room temperature. An open thermostat indicates failure and it must be replaced with the same temperature rating.
- Inspect wiring: Look for loose spade connectors or burned terminals. Reseat any loose connectors firmly.
- Reassemble and test: Reconnect all wires, reinstall the base, then test with water.
