Possible Causes
Scale sensor or flow sensor misreading, Incorrect descaling sequence, Stuck descaling microswitch, Firmware logic fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the machine before cleaning sensors or opening covers.
Steps:
- Follow manual sequence: Ensure you are starting the descaling program exactly as described in the Tefal user manual (button combination, tank fill level, etc.). Incorrect steps can trigger E09.
- Clean water tank and sensors: Remove and clean the water tank thoroughly. Wipe the tank seating area and any visible sensors (reed switch, optical sensor) with a soft, dry cloth.
- Reset the machine: Unplug for 10 minutes, then reconnect. Attempt to start descaling again with fresh descaling solution.
- Check flow during descaling: If the machine starts but stops with E09, there may be restricted flow. Descale manually by running several hot water cycles through the hot water outlet (if available) to clear partial blockages.
- Inspect descaling switch (advanced): Some models use a dedicated microswitch or sensor to detect descaling mode. Access the control panel and verify the switch actuates correctly.
- Service if persistent: If E09 remains after cleaning and correct procedure, the flow sensor or control board logic may be faulty and require professional service.
