Possible Causes
Failed MOSFET on main control board, Faulty high-speed switch or trigger contact, Partially shorted suction motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Remove the battery before opening any covers. Do not short battery terminals.
- Step 1 – Basic reset: Remove the battery for 60 seconds, then reinstall and try again. Sometimes the control board latches a fault that can be cleared.
- Step 2 – Check mode switch: On models with a physical high/low slider, move the switch back and forth several times to clean the contacts. Inspect for cracks or looseness.
- Step 3 – Verify airflow: Ensure filters and airflow paths are clean. Some Dirt Devil models limit high power if airflow is severely restricted.
- Step 4 – Listen to motor: If the motor sounds rough, whines, or smells burnt even on low, it may be drawing too much current at high speed, triggering E6.
- Step 5 – Replace components: If the switch feels loose or intermittent, replace the mode switch assembly. If the switch is good but E6 persists, the main control board or motor assembly likely needs replacement.
- When to stop: Board-level repairs (MOSFET replacement) are not recommended for DIY; replace the entire control module or consult a technician.
