Possible Causes
Brushroll jam causing belt slip, Overheated floorhead motor, Failing main motor windings, Dust buildup on motor causing hot smell
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn OFF the vacuum, remove the battery, and do not continue using it until the cause is found.
- Step 1 – Inspect floorhead: Remove the floorhead and check for jams. Smell the brushroll and belt area. If the smell is strongest here, replace the belt or floorhead motor.
- Step 2 – Check motor area: Remove dust cup and filters. Smell near the motor vents. If the burning smell is strongest here, the motor may be failing.
- Step 3 – Clean dust: Use a soft brush to remove dust from vents and around the motor housing.
- Step 4 – Test briefly: After cooling, run the vacuum for a few seconds. If the smell returns quickly, stop and replace the motorized floorhead assembly or main motor assembly as appropriate.
- Step 5 – Technician service: If you see smoke or melted plastic, do not use the vacuum again until inspected by a professional.
