Safety first: Remove the battery before inspecting connection points.

Inspect connection pins: Look at the electrical and mechanical connectors between the handheld unit and wand. Clean any dust and ensure pins are straight.
Check for magnets/sensors: Some models use magnets and reed switches to detect configuration. Ensure magnets are present and not dislodged.
Re-seat components: Assemble and disassemble the wand and handheld several times to ensure a solid connection.
Test in handheld mode: Try running the vacuum with only the handheld unit and a small accessory. If it refuses to run, the mode sensor may be faulty.

Persistent configuration errors typically require sensor or control board replacement by a service center.
