Possible Causes
Intermittent drain pump operation, Diverter motor jammed, Wiring harness issue to pump/diverter, Control board sensing error
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and shut off water. Use caution when working under the unit.
- Reset the control: Press and hold the Start or Cancel button (per user manual) to reset the dishwasher, or turn off the breaker for 5 minutes and restore power. Run a short cycle to see if C5 reappears.
- Inspect and clean filter/sump: Remove the lower rack and filter. Clean thoroughly and check the sump for debris that could interfere with the diverter or drain flow.
- Check drain performance: Start a cycle, then cancel it to force a drain. Listen for the drain pump. If it is noisy, intermittent, or weak, the pump may be failing.
- Access underside components: Pull the dishwasher out and remove the bottom panel. Inspect the drain pump and diverter motor area for signs of leaks or damage. Ensure wiring connectors are fully seated and not corroded.
- Check for obstructions: Remove the drain pump and inspect the impeller for debris. For models with a diverter valve, ensure it is not jammed by foreign objects.
- If C5 persists: If mechanical issues are ruled out, the control board or sensor feedback circuit may be faulty. At this point, professional diagnosis is recommended.
