Possible Causes

Failed tank heating element, Faulty high-limit thermostat, Defective temperature probe (NTC sensor), Heater contactor or relay failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and lock out/tag out if in a commercial setting. Hot surfaces and live terminals may be present.

Diagnostic steps:

  • Confirm incoming power: Verify correct voltage at the supply terminals with a multimeter (per Champion nameplate). Low or missing phase can prevent heating.
  • Inspect tank heater element: Access the wash tank heater flange under the tank. Look for signs of leakage, burn marks, or broken terminals. With power off, measure resistance across the heater terminals; an open circuit indicates a failed element.
  • Check high-limit thermostat: Locate the Champion high-limit cut-out on or near the tank. Ensure it has not tripped; some models have a manual reset button. If it repeatedly trips, investigate for low water level or scale buildup on the heater.
  • Test temperature probe (NTC): Remove the temperature sensor from the tank wall. Measure resistance at room temperature and compare to Champion specifications. A shorted or open sensor will cause E2 and prevent heating.
  • Inspect heater contactor/relay: In the control box, check the heater contactor or solid-state relay for burned contacts or loose wiring. Verify coil voltage is present when heat is demanded. Replace if the contactor does not close under command.

When to call a technician: Heater circuits draw high current. If you are not trained to work on high-amperage circuits or cannot verify correct voltage and wiring, contact a Champion-authorized technician.
