Possible Causes
Blocked drain filter in sump, Clogged drain hose or sink connection, Jammed or failed drain pump, Check valve stuck closed
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before reaching into the sump or working under the machine.
- Clean filters: Open the door, remove the lower rack, and take out the coarse and fine filters from the sump. Rinse them thoroughly under hot water and remove any food debris.
- Check for obstructions: Shine a light into the sump and feel carefully for broken glass, bones, or labels around the drain pump inlet. Remove any foreign objects with pliers.
- Inspect drain hose: Check that the drain hose behind the dishwasher is not kinked. Detach it from the sink trap or standpipe and flush it with hot water to clear grease or blockages.
- Test drain pump: Access the drain pump from the bottom. Remove the pump cover and check that the impeller spins freely. If jammed, clear debris. If the pump hums but does not turn, or is silent and tests open-circuit with a multimeter, replace the pump.
- Reassemble and test: Refit all parts, restore power, and run a drain or quick program to confirm that water is pumped out and E5 no longer appears.
