Possible Causes
Blocked drain pump impeller, Clogged drain hose or sink connection, Defective drain pump motor, Obstructed sump filter or non-return valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and avoid contact with sharp edges under the dishwasher.
- Clean filters: Open the door, remove the lower rack, and take out the coarse and fine filters from the sump. Rinse thoroughly under running water and remove any food debris or glass.
- Check for standing water: Use a sponge or cup to remove most of the standing water. Inspect the sump area with a flashlight for foreign objects blocking the drain inlet or non-return flap.
- Inspect drain hose: Under the sink, disconnect the dishwasher drain hose from the sink trap or garbage disposer. Check for clogs and flush with hot water. Ensure the hose is not kinked or crushed behind the dishwasher.
- Access drain pump: Remove the toe-kick panel and bottom cover. Locate the drain pump on the sump housing. Check for obstructions in the pump inlet. Rotate the impeller gently with a screwdriver; it should turn freely. If seized or noisy, replace the drain pump.
- Test pump operation: With the unit reassembled and powered, start a drain cycle and listen for the pump. If it is silent and receives proper voltage (check with a multimeter), the pump motor is faulty and must be replaced.
If E3 persists after clearing all blockages, the drain pump or control board may require replacement by a professional.
