Possible Causes

Partially blocked drain hose, Clogged check valve in sump, Weak drain pump, Garbage disposal knockout plug not removed

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power at the breaker and shut off water. Be prepared for standing water in the tub.

  • Remove standing water: Use a cup or sponge to bail out most of the water so you can access the sump area.
  • Clean sump and check valve: Remove the lower spray arm and filters. Look into the sump opening. Many GE dishwashers have a rubber flapper/check valve at the drain outlet. Make sure it moves freely and is not blocked by debris. Clean thoroughly.
  • Verify garbage disposal connection: If the dishwasher drain hose connects to a new disposal, ensure the disposal's dishwasher knockout plug has been removed. Disconnect the hose and look inside the disposal inlet; knock out the plug if present and remove it.
  • Inspect drain hose routing: Ensure the hose has a high loop under the counter and is not pinched behind the dishwasher. Straighten any kinks.
  • Test the drain pump: Access the pump from underneath. Check for obstructions and spin the impeller by hand. If it feels stiff, rattles, or hums but doesn't pump when powered, replace the pump.
