Possible Causes
Incoming water too cold, Failed heater element, Faulty temperature sensor (thermistor), Wiring issue to heater
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the breaker. Heating components can retain heat; allow time to cool.
- Check incoming water temperature: Run hot water at the kitchen sink for 1–2 minutes before starting the dishwasher. Water should be at least 120°F (49°C). If not, adjust the water heater.
- Inspect heater element: On many GE models, the heater is a visible metal loop at the bottom of the tub. Look for breaks, blisters, or burn marks. If damaged, it must be replaced.
- Test heater continuity: Access the heater terminals from underneath the tub. With power off, disconnect the wires and use a multimeter to check resistance. An open circuit indicates a failed heater.
- Check thermistor/temperature sensor: Some GE dishwashers use a thermistor in the sump. Inspect the wiring harness and connector. Test resistance against service specs; replace if out of range.
- Control board consideration: If heater and sensor test good but C6 persists, the main control board may not be energizing the heater relay and may need replacement.
