Possible Causes
Incoming hot water temperature below specification, Faulty thermistor / temperature sensor, Failed heater element, Faulty main control board not energizing heater
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before accessing internal wiring or heater components.
- Check incoming water temperature: Run hot water at the kitchen sink for 1–2 minutes. Use a thermometer to verify temperature is at least 120°F (49°C). If lower, adjust the water heater setting.
- Use appropriate cycle: Select a cycle with heated dry and sanitize options if available. Avoid short or eco cycles when heavy soil is present.
- Inspect heater element: Remove the lower rack and look at the exposed heater element (if present) at the bottom of the tub. Check for breaks, heavy scale, or burn marks. From underneath, test the element with a multimeter for continuity. Replace if open.
- Check thermistor / temperature sensor: Locate the temperature sensor (often in the sump area). Disconnect and test resistance against GE Café specifications. Replace if readings are out of range.
- Control board check: If heater and sensor test good but C6 persists, the main control board may not be energizing the heater relay and may require replacement.
