Possible Causes

Clogged drain hose, Blocked air gap or garbage disposal inlet, Obstructed sump or drain pump, Failed drain pump motor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and shut off water before working on the dishwasher. Never reach into the sump area with power connected.

Step-by-step checks:

  • 1. Inspect the sink drain and garbage disposal: If the dishwasher is newly installed or recently connected to a disposal, confirm the disposal knockout plug was removed. Clear any clogs in the sink drain that could back up into the dishwasher.
  • 2. Check the air gap (if installed): Remove the air gap cap on the sink and inspect for food debris or grease. Clean thoroughly and flush with hot water.
  • 3. Examine the drain hose: Pull the dishwasher slightly out if needed. Verify the hose is not kinked, crushed, or looped too low. Disconnect the hose at the sink/disposal end and blow through it or flush with water to confirm it is clear.
  • 4. Clean the sump and filter area: Remove the lower rack and spray arm. Take out the fine and coarse filters. Check the sump inlet to the drain pump for glass, seeds, or food chunks. Remove debris carefully.
  • 5. Test the drain pump: With power still OFF, access the bottom of the unit. Locate the drain pump on the side of the sump. Check for obstructions in the impeller. If the impeller is damaged or the pump hums but does not move water when powered, the pump likely needs replacement.
  • 6. Reset and test: Restore power, run a short cycle, and observe the drain phase. If C1 returns after confirming all hoses and sump are clear, the drain pump motor is probably failing and should be replaced.

When to call a technician: If you smell burning, see water leaks while testing, or are not comfortable removing the dishwasher from the cabinet, contact a professional.
