Steps:

1. Verify sanitize option: Confirm that the sanitize or high-temp option is selected and that incoming water is hot enough.
2. Inspect heater and wiring: Look for burned connectors or damaged heater terminals.
3. Test heater and thermistor (advanced): Use a multimeter to check continuity of the heater and resistance of the thermistor at known temperatures.
4. Replace failed components: Install a new heater or thermistor as indicated by test results.

If E6 remains, the main control board may not be driving the heater correctly and should be replaced by a professional.
