Possible Causes
Blocked drain pump impeller, Clogged drain hose or air gap, Failed drain pump motor, Faulty drain level sensor or pressure switch
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and ensure hot water has cooled before working in the sump area.
- Clean tank and sump filters: Remove the internal tank filters and strainers. Rinse thoroughly to remove food debris, glass, and scale that can restrict flow to the drain pump.
- Inspect drain pump impeller: Access the drain pump from the base or side panel. Remove the pump cover and check for foreign objects (bones, glass, cutlery) jamming the impeller. Clear obstructions and ensure the impeller spins freely.
- Check drain hose: Follow the drain hose from the pump to the building drain. Look for kinks, sagging sections filled with grease, or a blocked air gap. Flush the hose with hot water or replace if heavily scaled.
- Test drain pump motor: Disconnect the pump and measure coil resistance. If open or shorted, replace the drain pump assembly. Also inspect connectors for corrosion.
- Verify level sensor operation: If the pump runs but water remains, the level sensor or pressure switch may not be signaling empty. Clean the sensor hose and test the switch; replace if faulty.
- Run a drain test: Reassemble, restore power, and run a drain-only or service test. If E5 persists, the control board output to the pump may require professional diagnosis.
