Possible Causes

Blocked drain filter in sump, Clogged drain hose or sink spigot, Defective drain pump, Foreign object jammed in drain pump impeller

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Switch off power at the wall and ensure the water inside is cool before reaching into the tub.

  • Clean internal filters: Open the door, remove the lower basket, and twist out the central filter assembly in the sump. Rinse the fine and coarse filters thoroughly and remove any food debris or glass.
  • Check sump area: With filters removed, inspect the sump for seeds, bones, or labels that could block the drain port. Carefully remove any obstructions.
  • Inspect drain hose and sink connection: Under the sink, remove the dishwasher drain hose from the spigot. If the sink waste is new, ensure the knockout plug has been removed. Flush the hose with water to clear grease or sludge.
  • Check for pump blockage: On many SMEG models, the drain pump is accessible behind the lower front kick panel. Remove the panel, locate the pump, and check for coins, glass, or food blocking the impeller. Rotate the impeller gently to ensure it spins freely.
  • Test cycle: Reassemble, restore power, and run a drain or short program. If E2 persists and the pump hums but does not move water, the drain pump motor is likely defective and should be replaced.
