Possible Causes

Defective circulation pump motor, Jammed impeller due to debris, Faulty motor capacitor (on older models), Wiring fault between motor and control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the appliance before accessing the base or motor area.

  • Listen for motor activity: Start a program and listen after filling. A humming noise without water movement suggests a jammed or failed circulation pump.
  • Check for obstructions: Remove the lower spray arm and filters. Inspect the sump for broken glass, bones, or plastic that could jam the impeller. Some SMEG models allow limited access to the impeller from inside the tub.
  • Access circulation pump: Lay the dishwasher on its back (with towels) and remove the base panel. Locate the circulation pump attached to the sump. Check for leaks or burnt smell.
  • Test impeller and capacitor: Try to rotate the impeller by hand; it should move freely. If stiff or seized, the pump must be replaced. On models with an external start capacitor, test or replace the capacitor if the motor hums but will not start.
  • Replace pump if necessary: Disconnect wiring and hose clamps, swap in a new OEM SMEG circulation pump, and reassemble. Ensure all seals are correctly seated to prevent leaks.
