Possible Causes
Blocked side water matrix (water softener/heat exchanger), Stuck water distributor valve, Faulty diverter motor, Limescale buildup in water channels
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and close the water tap before removing side panels.
- Access side matrix: Remove the left side panel (on most SMEG models) to expose the transparent water matrix/heat exchanger assembly.
- Inspect for blockages: Look for heavy limescale, sludge, or undissolved salt blocking the channels. If the matrix is heavily fouled, replacement is often more effective than cleaning.
- Check distributor valve: Locate the water distributor or diverter motor attached to the matrix or sump. Ensure the wiring is secure and there are no obvious cracks or leaks.
- Run a descaling cycle: With the machine reassembled, run an empty hot cycle with a dishwasher descaler specifically approved for SMEG or similar European dishwashers to help clear minor scale.
- Replace faulty components: If E8 persists and water flow to spray arms is weak, the diverter motor or matrix assembly may need replacement.
