Dishwasher does not heat water properly; cycles run long or end with cold dishes and E3 displayed.

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and allow the dishwasher to cool completely before servicing.

• Access the heating element: Remove the lower rack and inspect the exposed heating element at the bottom of the tub (or inline heater on some built-in Summit models). Look for visible breaks, blisters, or heavy scale.
• Test the heater: From underneath the unit, disconnect the heater terminals. Use a multimeter to check resistance; an open circuit indicates a failed heating element that must be replaced.
• Check high-limit thermostat / NTC: Locate the high-limit thermostat or temperature sensor (NTC) mounted on the sump or tub base. Test for continuity (thermostat) or appropriate resistance (NTC) per service specs. Replace if open or out of range.
• Inspect wiring: Examine the harness from the control board to the heater and thermostat for burnt connectors or melted insulation. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
• Control board: If the heater and sensors test good, the main control module may have a failed heater relay. Inspect for burnt solder joints. Replacement of the board is typically required.
• Run a hot cycle test: After repairs, run a heavy or intensive cycle and open the door mid-cycle (carefully) to confirm the water is hot and the error does not reappear.
