Possible Causes
Blown thermal fuse on blower housing, Open high-limit thermostat, Severely restricted airflow causing overheat, Shorted heater relay on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer and, for gas models, shut off the gas supply before servicing. Internal components can be hot; allow them to cool.
- Access the blower housing: Remove the rear panel. Locate the thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat on the blower housing or exhaust duct.
- Test the thermal fuse: Disconnect the wires and check continuity with a multimeter. A blown fuse will show open (no continuity) and must be replaced; it cannot be reset.
- Check the high-limit thermostat: Test for continuity at room temperature. Replace if open.
- Correct airflow issues: Clean the lint filter, internal ducts, blower wheel, and entire vent system to prevent repeat overheating.
- Reassemble and test: Replace any failed components, reassemble the dryer, restore power (and gas), and run a test cycle.
If the fuse or thermostat blows again quickly, there may be a shorted heating element or control relay that requires further diagnosis.
