Possible Causes

Defective drive motor, Failed motor start capacitor, Jammed blower wheel or drum, Motor wiring harness fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dryer. Do not keep pressing Start if the motor only hums; this can overheat and damage the motor.

Steps:

  • 1. Check drum movement: Open the door and rotate the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly with moderate resistance. If it is very stiff or blocked, inspect for foreign objects between drum and front felt or rear bearing.
  • 2. Access the motor: Remove the top and side or rear panels (depending on model) to access the drive motor and belt. Check that the belt is correctly seated and not jammed.
  • 3. Inspect blower wheel: On many Brandt dryers, the blower is attached to the motor shaft. Check for socks or lint blocking the blower housing. Clear any obstruction.
  • 4. Test the start capacitor: Locate the motor capacitor (usually near the motor, cylindrical). Discharge it safely, then test with a capacitance meter. If it is far out of spec or bulged/leaking, replace it.
  • 5. Motor and wiring: Check the motor connector and harness for burns or loose pins. If the motor windings test open or shorted, the motor must be replaced.

Note: Motor replacement involves belt removal and sometimes drum removal; if you are not comfortable with this, contact a professional.
