Possible Causes
Blocked airflow causing motor to overheat, Worn motor bearings increasing load, Faulty or weak motor cooling fan, Defective motor thermal protector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes before working on it.
- Clean filters and ducts: Ensure all lint filters, condenser (if fitted), and internal ducts are clean to reduce load on the motor.
- Check motor ventilation: Remove the rear panel and inspect the motor cooling fan (if present). Clean any lint from the fan blades and ensure it spins freely.
- Spin drum by hand: With power off, rotate the drum. If it feels stiff, investigate drum bearings, support wheels, or felt seals for binding that could overload the motor.
- Allow full cool-down: Some motor protectors auto-reset when cool. After cleaning and checks, leave the dryer unplugged for an hour, then reconnect and test.
- If E17 recurs quickly: The motor or its thermal protector may be failing and should be tested and replaced by a technician.
