Possible Causes
Broken or slipped drive belt, Worn motor start capacitor, Seized drum support rollers or rear bearing, Obstruction between drum and cabinet
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer before opening any panels.
Initial test:
- Open the door and try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very stiff or jammed, suspect a mechanical obstruction or bearing issue.
Mechanical checks:
- Remove the top cover and inspect the belt. If broken or off the pulley, replace and refit correctly.
- Check drum support rollers (if fitted) and rear bearing for wear or seizure; replace if noisy or stiff.
- Look for trapped items (e.g., bra wires, coins) between the drum and front felt seal.
Electrical checks:
- On models with a start capacitor, test its capacitance and replace if out of spec.
After repair, reassemble and test. If the motor still only hums and does not turn with a free drum and good capacitor, the motor itself may need replacement.
