Possible Causes
Shorted heater relay on main control PCB, Shorted heater triac, Internal PCB damage from surge, Shorted heating element to chassis
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer immediately if you smell burning or suspect an electrical short. Do not continue to operate the appliance.
- Inspect heater wiring: Remove the rear panel and examine the heating element assembly and its wiring. Look for burned insulation, melted connectors, or signs of arcing to the metal chassis.
- Check element to ground: With a multimeter, test resistance between each heater terminal and the metal heater housing. Any low resistance reading indicates the element is shorted to ground and must be replaced.
- Inspect the main control PCB: Remove the top panel and access the control board. Look for burned areas around the heater relay or triac. A strong burnt smell or visible charring indicates the board is damaged.
- Replace damaged components: If the element is shorted, replace the heating element assembly and any burned wiring. If the board is damaged, replace the main control PCB. Both may need replacement if the short has propagated.
- Do not bypass safety devices: Never bypass thermostats or relays to force the dryer to heat; this is a serious fire hazard.
