Possible Causes

Open high-limit thermostat on heater housing, Tripped thermal cut-out due to overheating, Loose thermostat wiring, Failed heater assembly causing abnormal temperatures

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dryer and allow it to cool completely before accessing internal components.

  • 1. Check airflow and lint: Before replacing parts, clean the lint filter, internal ducts, blower housing, and external vent. Poor airflow often causes high-limit devices to trip.
  • 2. Access heater housing: Remove rear or side panel (model dependent) to access the heater housing. Locate the high-limit thermostat and thermal cut-out (usually small round or oval devices mounted to the housing).
  • 3. Test continuity: With the dryer unplugged, disconnect the wires from the thermostat and thermal cut-out. Use a multimeter to check for continuity. An open reading indicates a failed device.
  • 4. Replace failed devices: If the high-limit thermostat or thermal cut-out is open, replace with Fisher & Paykel-compatible parts. It is often recommended to replace the thermostat and thermal cut-out as a set.
  • 5. Inspect heater: Visually inspect the heater element for breaks, hot spots, or contact with the housing. Replace the heater assembly if damaged.
  • 6. Reassemble and test: Reassemble panels, restore power, and run a test cycle. Monitor for normal heating and ensure E3 does not reappear.
