Safety first: Unplug the dryer. Do not repeatedly try to start a jammed motor; this can cause further damage.
Step-by-step checks:
- Check drum rotation: Open the door and rotate the drum by hand. If it is difficult to turn, suspect mechanical binding.
- Access drum supports: Remove the front panel and inspect the drum support rollers, idler pulley, and belt. Look for flat spots, seized bearings, or foreign objects.
- Inspect blower: Access the blower wheel and check for obstructions or a loose wheel on the motor shaft.
- Motor test: With the belt removed, spin the motor shaft by hand. If stiff or noisy, replace the drive motor.
Tip: When replacing a motor, it is wise to replace the belt and idler pulley at the same time.
