Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer or switch off the dedicated breaker before any disassembly. Verify the drum is cool.
Step-by-step checks:
- Power reset: Disconnect power for 5 minutes, then restore and try to start a cycle. If E3 returns, continue.
- Access the thermistor: Remove the rear panel (rear-vent models) or front lower panel (some front-service models). Locate the outlet thermistor on or near the exhaust duct, usually a small sensor with two wires.
- Inspect wiring: Check the thermistor connector and harness for burns, breaks, or loose connections. Reseat the connector firmly.
- Test the thermistor: With the dryer unplugged, disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance with a multimeter. At room temperature (~70°F / 21°C), most GE Profile thermistors should read roughly 10k–50k ohms (check your tech sheet). An open (OL) or 0 ohms reading indicates a bad thermistor.
- Replace if faulty: If readings are out of spec, remove the mounting screw(s) and install a new OEM thermistor. Reconnect the wires securely.
- Control board check: If the thermistor and wiring test good but E3 persists, the main control board may be misreading the sensor and require replacement. This is typically a level-4/5 repair.
When to call a pro: If you are not comfortable using a multimeter or accessing internal components, contact a qualified technician.
