Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer. For gas models, also shut off the gas supply valve. Allow the dryer to cool completely.
Determine model type: Check the model tag to confirm if your GE Profile dryer is electric or gas.
- Electric models – check heater:
- Remove the rear panel to access the heater housing.
- Disconnect the heater terminals and test the heating element for continuity. A typical element reads 8–20 ohms. OL (open) means it is burned out.
- Inspect wiring and terminals for burns or breaks; repair any damaged connectors.
- Replace the heating element if open or visibly broken.
- Gas models – check ignition:
- Remove the front lower panel or front panel to view the burner assembly.
- Run a timed dry cycle and watch through the burner view port: you should see the igniter glow and then gas ignite. If the igniter never glows, test it for continuity (should not be open).
- If the igniter glows but gas never lights, suspect gas valve coils or gas supply issues.
- Replace faulty igniter or gas valve coils as needed.
- Control board: If all heating components test good, the main control board heater relay may be defective and require replacement.
Warning: Gas work involves explosion and carbon monoxide risks. If you smell gas or are unsure, stop and call a licensed gas technician.
