Possible Causes

Defective exhaust thermistor, Shorted thermistor wiring, Failed main control board, Severe lint blockage causing over-temperature condition

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dryer or turn off the breaker. Gas dryers: shut off gas supply.

Inspect exhaust thermistor and airflow:

  • Pull the dryer away from the wall and disconnect the vent hose.
  • Check the vent hose and wall duct for heavy lint buildup or crushed sections; clean or replace as needed.
  • Remove the rear panel to access the exhaust duct and thermistor (near the blower outlet).
  • Disconnect the thermistor and test resistance at room temperature; compare to GE specifications. Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
  • Inspect wiring from thermistor to control board for damage or loose connections.
  • Clean lint from the blower housing and internal ducts.
  • Reassemble, reconnect vent (ensuring it is not kinked), restore power, and test.

If E5 returns: The main control board temperature circuit may be defective and should be replaced by a professional.
