Possible Causes
Worn or seized drum motor, Faulty motor start capacitor (on older Hoover vented/condenser models), Broken or slipping drive belt, Faulty motor relay or triac on control PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer. Moving parts and live circuits are hazardous.
- Check drum movement: Open the door and try to rotate the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly with moderate resistance. If it is very stiff or jammed, inspect for foreign objects between drum and cabinet or seized bearings.
- Inspect the drive belt: Remove the top and rear panel. Check if the belt is intact and correctly routed around the drum and motor pulley. If broken or heavily worn, replace the belt.
- Examine the motor: Look for signs of overheating (burnt smell, discoloration). Spin the motor pulley by hand; it should turn freely. If stiff or noisy, the motor may need replacement.
- Check the start capacitor (if fitted): On some Hoover dryers, a cylindrical capacitor is mounted near the motor. If the drum can be started by hand but the motor will not start alone, the capacitor may be faulty. Replace with the exact µF rating and voltage.
- Electrical diagnosis: If mechanical parts are fine, a technician should test the motor windings and control board outputs. Do not attempt live testing unless you are trained and equipped.
