Possible Causes

Failed drum drive motor, Open or shorted motor capacitor, Broken or jammed drive belt, Motor harness connection loose or burnt

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dryer before opening any panels. Sharp edges inside the cabinet can cut; wear gloves.

  • Check drum movement: Open the door and try to rotate the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly. If seized or very stiff, suspect a jammed belt, foreign object, or seized motor bearing.
  • Inspect belt: Remove the top and front panel as per service access on your Hotpoint-Ariston model. Check if the drive belt is broken, off the pulley, or wrapped around the motor shaft. Replace if damaged.
  • Test motor capacitor: Locate the start/run capacitor near the motor. Look for bulging or leaking. A faulty capacitor is a common cause of F02. Replace with the exact µF rating specified for your model.
  • Check wiring: Inspect the motor plug and harness for heat damage or loose connections. Reseat connectors firmly.
  • Motor replacement: If the motor hums but will not start even with a good capacitor and free drum, the motor windings may be faulty. Replace the drum motor assembly.

Note: Motor and capacitor testing with a multimeter should only be done if you are confident working with electrical components.
