Possible Causes
Seized drum support bearing, Worn or jammed drum belt, Faulty motor start capacitor (where fitted), Failed drive motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer before opening any panels. Sharp edges inside the cabinet.
Steps to check:
- Check drum rotation by hand: Open the door and try to turn the drum clockwise by hand. It should move smoothly. If it is very stiff or jammed, suspect bearings or a foreign object.
- Inspect belt: Remove the top cover and, if needed, the rear panel. Check that the drum belt is intact, correctly routed around the motor pulley and idler pulley, and not jammed.
- Look for obstructions: Check between drum and cabinet edges for trapped clothing, bra wires, or screws that can lock the drum.
- Check motor capacitor (if fitted): On some Hotpoint dryers, a start capacitor is mounted near the motor. Look for bulging, leaking, or burnt smell. Replace if suspect.
- Test motor: With the belt removed, see if the motor shaft spins freely by hand. If stiff, noisy, or seized, the motor likely needs replacement.
Note: Motor and bearing replacement require significant disassembly; if unsure, contact a professional.
