Possible Causes

Severely blocked lint filter or condenser, obstructed exhaust duct, failing motor overheating, loose or burnt electrical connections

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Immediate safety: Turn off the dryer, unplug it, and do not continue using it until the cause is identified. If you see smoke or flames, evacuate and call emergency services.

Inspection and cleaning:

  • Clean lint filter and ducts: Remove all lint from the filter, filter housing, and exhaust duct. For condenser models, clean the condenser and sump thoroughly.
  • Check for scorched wiring: Remove the rear panel and inspect wiring around the heater, motor, and terminal block for signs of burning or melting. Replace any damaged wiring and connectors.
  • Inspect motor: Smell near the motor area. If the motor casing is discoloured or has a strong burnt odour, the motor may be failing and should be replaced.

Do not ignore: If the burning smell persists after cleaning and inspection, stop using the dryer and contact a qualified technician. Fire risk is significant.
