Possible Causes
Shorted heating element to ground, Stuck-closed cycling thermostat, Failed high-limit thermostat, Restricted airflow
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Stop the dryer immediately, unplug it, and allow it to cool. Overheating is a serious fire risk.
- Check vent and lint filter: Ensure the vent is clear and the lint filter is clean to restore proper airflow.
- Inspect heating element: Remove the rear panel and visually inspect the element for coils touching the metal housing. Test for continuity between each element terminal and the housing; any continuity indicates a shorted element that must be replaced.
- Test thermostats: Check the cycling thermostat and high-limit thermostat for proper operation with a multimeter. Replace any that are stuck closed or out of specification.
- Replace failed components: Install a new heating element and thermostat kit as needed, reassemble the dryer, and test on a monitored cycle.
