Possible Causes
Restricted airflow causing high temperature, Failing drive motor overheating, Clogged lint filter or vent, Defective motor centrifugal switch
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer and allow it to cool if it feels hot to the touch.
- Clean lint filter and vent: Remove and clean the lint screen. Inspect and clean the entire exhaust vent from the dryer to the outside hood.
- Check for internal lint buildup: Remove the rear and lower front panels and vacuum lint from the blower housing, heater area, and internal ducts.
- Test operation with vent disconnected: Temporarily disconnect the vent hose and run the dryer. If it runs normally, the external vent is restricted and needs cleaning or shortening.
- Evaluate the motor: If the dryer still shuts off quickly with good airflow, the motor may be overheating. Listen for grinding or squealing noises. A hot, noisy motor that stops and restarts after cooling should be replaced.
