KitchenAid Extended Dry Times – Airflow or Sensor Issue

Dryer takes too long to dry clothes; loads are still damp at the end of the cycle.

Possible Causes

Restricted exhaust vent, Dirty lint screen, Lint buildup in blower housing, Coated moisture sensor bars

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Unplug the dryer before removing venting or panels. Wear a dust mask when cleaning lint.

  • Step 1 – Clean lint screen: Remove and clean the lint filter. Wash with warm soapy water if it appears coated, then dry completely.
  • Step 2 – Inspect and clean venting: Disconnect the vent hose from the dryer and check for lint buildup, kinks, or crushing. Clean the full length of the vent to the outside using a vent brush.
  • Step 3 – Check exterior hood: Ensure the outside vent hood opens fully and is not blocked by lint, nests, or snow.
  • Step 4 – Clean moisture sensor bars: Inside the drum, locate the metal sensor bars and clean them with rubbing alcohol to remove fabric softener residue that can affect automatic cycles.
  • Step 5 – Test with timed dry: Run a load on high heat timed dry with the vent disconnected (temporarily, in a safe area). If dry times improve, the issue is venting; if not, further heating system diagnosis is needed.
