Possible Causes

Failed drive motor, Open or shorted motor winding, Loose or damaged motor harness, Faulty motor relay on main control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Unplug the dryer before accessing internal components. The motor and control carry high voltage.

  • Step 1 – Listen for motor: Try to start a cycle. If you hear only a click from the relay but the drum does not turn, suspect the motor or its circuit.
  • Step 2 – Access the motor: Remove the front panel and drum (or rear panel, depending on model) to expose the drive motor and belt.
  • Step 3 – Check belt and drum: Ensure the belt is intact and properly routed. Spin the drum pulley by hand; it should turn freely without grinding.
  • Step 4 – Inspect wiring: Check the motor harness connector for a tight fit and no burn marks. Reseat the connector.
  • Step 5 – Test motor windings: With the motor disconnected, measure resistance across the run and start windings per the tech sheet. An open or shorted reading indicates a bad motor.
  • Step 6 – Replace motor if defective: Remove the belt from the motor pulley, unbolt the motor, and install a new OEM KitchenAid/Whirlpool drive motor. Reinstall belt and drum.

If the motor tests good but F26 persists, the main control board motor relay may be faulty and should be tested or replaced by a technician.
