Possible Causes
Failed door switch, Defective start switch (mechanical models), Open thermal fuse, Failed drive motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the dryer before servicing. For gas models, also shut off gas.
- Step 1 – Confirm door closure: Ensure the door is fully closed and the latch engages. If the door switch is not actuated, the dryer will not start.
- Step 2 – Test door switch: Access the door switch and test for continuity while pressing and releasing the actuator. Replace if it does not change state.
- Step 3 – Check thermal fuse: Locate the thermal fuse on the blower housing and test for continuity. Replace if open.
- Step 4 – Test start switch (knob models): On mechanical-timer models, test the start switch for continuity when pressed. Replace if faulty.
- Step 5 – Evaluate motor: If all switches and fuses are good, the drive motor may be seized or electrically open. Try turning the drum by hand; if stiff or noisy, remove the belt and test the motor shaft. Replace the motor if it hums but will not start or tests open.
