Possible Causes
Open or shorted exhaust thermistor, Loose thermistor wiring, Failed thermistor, Faulty main control temperature circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the dryer and shut off gas (if applicable) before accessing internal components.
- Step 1 – Locate the thermistor: On most Maytag dryers, the exhaust thermistor is mounted on the blower housing or exhaust duct near the lint screen housing.
- Step 2 – Inspect wiring: Check the two-wire connector at the thermistor for a secure fit and no corrosion or damage. Reseat the connector.
- Step 3 – Test thermistor resistance: Disconnect the thermistor and measure its resistance with a multimeter at room temperature (typically around 10k–12k ohms at 77°F, but verify with your tech sheet). An open or very low reading indicates a bad thermistor.
- Step 4 – Replace thermistor if faulty: Remove the mounting screw(s), swap in a new OEM Maytag thermistor, and reconnect the wiring.
- Step 5 – Check for lint buildup: While the blower housing is accessible, vacuum out lint that may cause overheating and erratic temperature readings.
- Step 6 – Control board check: If a known-good thermistor tests correctly but F04 persists, the main control board's temperature sensing circuit may be defective and require replacement.
