Possible Causes

Broken drive belt, Seized idler pulley, Seized drum roller, Weak motor start winding or capacitor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dryer before opening the cabinet. Do not keep trying to start a humming motor; it can overheat.

  • Try rotating drum by hand: With the door open, attempt to turn the drum. If it is very stiff, internal components are binding.
  • Inspect drive belt: Remove the top and front panel. If the belt is broken or off the pulleys, replace it and inspect pulleys.
  • Check idler and rollers: Spin each by hand. Replace any that are stiff or noisy.
  • Test motor: With the belt removed, run the motor briefly (if safe to do so) to see if it starts freely. If it only hums, the motor or its capacitor is likely faulty and should be replaced.

After replacing worn parts, reassemble and test. Persistent humming indicates a failing motor that should not be used.
