Possible Causes

Open heating element, Blown thermal cutoff, Failed cycling thermostat, One leg of power missing (electric models)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dryer and shut off gas (for gas models) before servicing. High voltage and high temperatures are involved.

  • Verify power supply: For electric dryers, check that the breaker is not partially tripped. The drum can run on 120V but heat requires full 240V.
  • Clean lint and vents: Blocked airflow can blow safety devices. Clean the lint filter, internal ducts, and external vent thoroughly.
  • Test thermal fuse and cutoff: Access the blower housing and heater assembly. Use a multimeter to test the thermal fuse and thermal cutoff for continuity. Replace any open devices and correct airflow issues.
  • Check heating element: Test the element for continuity and for no continuity to ground. Replace if open or shorted.
  • Inspect thermostats: Test the cycling thermostat and high-limit thermostat. Replace if defective.

If all components test good, the main control board heater relay or gas valve control (on gas models) may be faulty and should be checked by a technician.
